About Deon Davis-Harris
My name is Deon Davis-Harris and I am a wife and a mom to two boys ages 20 and 14 years old that I was blessed to bring into the world and fortunate to have four adult step children. I moved to Bedford-Stuyvesant from Borem Hill in 1994, over 20 years ago. Presently, I work for New York City Transit and have been employed there for over 25 years. I am a Budget Manager for the Department of Subways and my job is to prepare the budget, request the hiring of personnel and act as a liaison in requesting resources needed to serve Transit commuters with the most efficient subway service.
In 1998, I became active in my community by joining the neighborhoods Herkimer Square Block Association. I was Co-Chair and actively work together with my neighbors to get our neighborhood issues resolved. Six years after having my second son, I saw a need for a nice quaint southern-style coffee house that I believed would be beneficial to the community and they would enjoy as well.
In 2007 I decided, along with my business partner to open a restaurant and named it Everything Scratch Cafe. The Cafe served the community for eight years bringing a quality food establishment to the community. We served and delivered breakfast and lunch to the surrounding schools, churches, businesses and the local residents. Because of my passion to bring a quality food establishment to the community, I was recognized and awarded the entreprenuer award by the Bed-Stuy Alive Committee in 2009.
In 2008, I was appointed to the Community Board by Council Member Darlene Mealy. I have served on the Economic Development Committee and presently on the Youth Education & Personnel Committees.
In 2010, a community resident, my business partner and I were having a discussion about the need for wellness programs and youth recreational activities that would be beneficial to the community. This is how Not Just Hoops was born. Since then, Not Just Hoops, a 501(c)3 organization has been steadily growing and expanding into avenues that would be beneficial to Brooklyn Communities. Since we have established a good foundation for our organization, we look to expand to other Communities as well.
